Greater market access for OCOP products in new Hai Phong city

The merger of Hai Duong province and Hai Phong city has opened up a broader market for OCOP (One Commune One Product) items.

Diverse products

Following the merger, Hai Phong city now has 647 OCOP products, eight of which are rated 5 stars (national standard), and the rest 4 or 3 stars.

These OCOP products are mainly farm produce, food, processed food (confectionery), local specialties, traditional handicrafts, and tourism services.

Quang Hai Co., Ltd., headquartered in Cat Hai special zone of Hai Phong city, has 16 4-star OCOP products, all of them were already available on the shelves of supermarkets, shops, and markets in the former Hai Phong and Hai Duong areas in the past.

Since the merger in early July, the company has worked out plans to take measures to tap into the new market.

Dao Quang Chuyen, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Hoang Giang JSC. in Thanh Dong ward, believed that the merger would open up major opportunities for businesses in general and those with OCOP products in particular as it provides access to a larger consumer market.

The company has three 5-star OCOP products and seven 4-star ones. Following the merger of the two localities, it immediately started assessing potential growth areas and planned to open more agents and distributors.

Market expansion

The newly formed Hai Phong city has 342 markets, 14 shopping centers, 34 supermarkets, and thousands of retail outlets. The expanded distribution system, including retail channels, shopping malls, and local e-commerce platforms, has made it easier for OCOP products from various wards and communes to share shelf space at common points of sale. This helps improve product visibility to consumers, reduce logistics costs, and open up market connection opportunities, providing a solid foundation for OCOP products to expand their customer base.

The merger has also enabled large-scale trade promotion programs for OCOP products.

Hoang Giang JSC. has recently displayed and propagated its products at the Hai Phong Product and Cuisine Fair.

The event, held from July 5 – 7, featured 40 booths of 37 businesses and production facilities in the city, showcasing OCOP products, handicrafts, food items, etc.

This was the second trade promotion event organized by the Hai Phong Department of Industry and Trade to celebrate the merger of Hai Duong province and Hai Phong city.

Previously, the Departments of Industry and Trade of both localities jointly held a promotional week featuring Thanh Ha lychee and typical OCOP products at Aeon Mall Hai Phong Le Chan in June.

If this opportunity to expand market space is effectively exploited, along with appropriate support policies, OCOP products will not only retain their unique identity after the merger but also reach further, contributing to fostering the new Hai Phong city’s economic development.
