Au Viet Farm Cooperative cultivates asparagus according to VietGAP standard
Au Viet Farm Cooperative in Kim Xuyen commune, Hai Duong province’s Kim Thanh district, has basically completed a registration dossier for its asparagus to participate in the 2021 "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program.
Asparagus has been planted by Au Viet Farm Cooperative for more than two years.
Bui Van Duy, generally in charge of the cooperative, said asparagus is an easy plant that can be grown after three months of seed incubation. The plant can be harvested after 5 – 6 months with a productivity of 2.5 – 3 kg/sao (360 m²)/day. Asparagus exploitation period is 6 – 8 years.
More than 1 ha of the cooperative’s asparagus is being exploited with 65 – 70 kg harvested each day.
For asparagus to effectively grow, the cooperative always attaches much importance to applying technical advances to cultivation, care, harvest, and product preservation.
Asparagus is being grown in poly houses following VietGAP standard with an automatic irrigation system.
After harvest, asparagus is preliminarily processed, sorted, divided into bundles averagely weighing 1 kg each, and packed in paper boxes for sale.
The cooperative’s asparagus is mainly sold to supermarkets and clean food stores in Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, etc. for VND75,000-85,000/kg.
Duy added that there are many farms and cooperatives growing asparagus on the market. However, not all units can cultivate asparagus in VietGAP direction with a strict control process from seeds, soil, water to agricultural materials.

For further market expansion and sustainable competition, the cooperative is accelerating the completion of procedures for certifying the product’s satisfaction of OCOP standard.
Nguyen Thi Lien, Deputy Head of the district Agriculture and Rural Development Division, said the district had three OCOP certified products in 2020, in which Au Viet Farm Cooperative’s cantaloupe achieved a 4-star OCOP title.
With experience in OCOP product cultivation, this year, the cooperative registered for asparagus development. This is also one of seven products of Kim Thanh district registered for OCOP development this year.
