Before Wipha, the third storm to hit Vietnam this year, makes landfall, many businesses in Hai Phong city have proactively taken various measures to protect workers and assets.

Storm Wipha is strong, complicated, and forecast to directly affect localities from Quang Ninh to Thanh Hoa, including Hai Phong city, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. To prepare for the storm, businesses in the city have urgently deployed preventive measures with the guiding principle of staying proactive and avoiding surprises.

Sumidenso Vietnam Co., Ltd. is currently employing about 10,000 workers at two facilities. The company promptly notified all staff to stay off work from the night of July 21 through July 22 upon news that Storm Wipha would make landfall in Hai Phong.

To maintain delivery schedules, the workers will be rescheduled to make up for the time later in the week. The company requested that the employees strictly follow local authorities’ instructions on flood and storm prevention during the break.

Nguyen Minh Phuong, a resident of Vinh Lai commune and an employee at VinFast Production and Trading JSC. in Dinh Vu–Cat Hai Economic Zone, said his company had allowed workers to stay home starting the afternoon of July 21 to avoid the storm. “We travel quite far to work by company shuttle, so being allowed to stay home is important for our safety. This is also a chance for us to take storm precautions at home,” said Phuong.

According to a survey by the Hai Phong Newspaper, by the afternoon of July 21, many businesses in Hai Phong had allowed workers to stay home to avoid the storm. Most of these companies continued to honor employee benefits such as full pay and attendance bonuses during the time off.

However, some other enterprises, such as the limited liability companies of Camex Vietnam, Hearty Rise Vietnam, and Tan A Aluminum, continued production on July 21 due to pressure from order deadlines. They plan to adjust work schedules to ensure employee safety depending on the weather developments.

To maintain stable operations, local businesses have also prepared backup power supplies. On-site fire prevention and firefighting systems have been inspected, upgraded, or replaced as needed. Many companies have trimmed trees, reinforced workshops, covered machinery, and relocated materials to safer areas.

In recent days, infrastructure developers in Hai Phong’s economic zones and industrial parks have rushed to take measures to protect corporate assets before the storm hits.

Pham Trung Phong, Head of the Management Board of Cong Hoa Industrial Park in Tran Hung Dao ward, said 50 personnel have been assigned to work around the clock, along with two cranes, three excavators, and other specialized equipment to support businesses in storm prevention. Drainage ditches have been cleared to prevent flooding, and warning signs have been installed in areas at risk of deep inundation.
